The Art of Engaging Students
The most important school-based relationship for students is the relationship they have with their teachers. Student engagement in online or face-to-face learning is an important issue that educators need to address. Whether your students are "ghosting" you online or face-to-face, this session will provide ways to design student-friendly assessments that also provide us with the data needed to determine the students' level of understanding.

Advocacy 101
Advocacy is learning how to speak up for, to support decision-making and learn how to access information/understanding to help support you on your journey. Advocating for needs can be difficult in general, but, it can be even more challenging when you are trying to advocate for your child/student or you are trying to teach your child/student to advocate for themselves. This session will help develop a general understanding of child rights & advocacy, related NLPS administrative procedures as well as provide research-based strategies to fill your advocacy and conflict resolution tool kit. This will be a fun, engaging, strategy-filled session that is sure to give you a few “Ah-ha’s” and “Ha-Ha’s”. You will need paper and a writing utensil for this session.

Integers: Drop the Rules; Work on Number Sense
There are a lot of integer ideas that need to be explored prior to operating with integers. And, many of the procedures we ask kids to use rely on rule following as opposed to number sense being their “rule”. Often the big ideas are ignored or unexplainably hidden from students. They are told a way to get an answer that they are not asked to accept rather than understand
Subtraction in particular seems mysterious to many students. How can we give them something more tangible to hang onto?
Anything we ask students to do should be able to be explained within a model that shows the math.
We will look at a couple of models embedded in Big Ideas that help students to see the math in action. No tricks, just sound math that aligns with the always present and reliable Big Ideas.

Technology Enabled Teaching Design
Blended Learning: Station Rotation
Based on the work of Dr. Catlin Tucker

The station rotation model is a blended learning strategy that supports the inclusion of all levels of learners. It supports the teacher to design learning activities that take into account the teaching and learning needs of students who get it; students who just about got it; students who did not get it at all; students with modified programming. Sharing our teacher led instruction model with our online learning stations and off line learning stations; we will show our growth as teachers in the teaching design meets learning design axis.

Please bring your own device to be able to take notes and access shared slides for examples.

Emotional De-escalation In the Classroom
This is a skills-based workshop which will teach you how to help someone quickly de-escalate an overwhelming emotion to return to a more rational, flexible and receptive state of mind. This workshop is especially useful for parents, teachers, administrators, and front-line workers who are confronted with the emotional dysregulation of others and aren't sure what to say or do to help the situation.

This workshop was developed by Dr. Adele Lafrance, who has a PhD in Child and Clinical Psychology and is the co-director Mental Health Foundations. After working for many years with Canadian school boards as a psychologist, Adele developed this quick and effective de-escalation tool for teachers in direct response to their classroom needs as well as their feelings of professional burnout. Adele, who is based out of Ontario, has delivered the workshop countless times to parent groups, schools and police officers. Sue Huff has been authorized by Dr. Lafrance to deliver this workshop in Alberta.

At the conclusion, participants will have:
  • a quick strategy (<3 minutes) to de-escalate any intense emotion, in anyone, of any age or background
  • insight into what is happening in the brain when a person is flooded with emotion and why they can't learn, receive direction or support in this state
  • a deeper understanding of our own strengths and weaknesses when dealing with the emotion of others
  • access to additional resources, including free webinars to reinforce skills
  • the ability to role model this approach at work, at home and in the community, creating ripples of positive change around accepting and processing emotions

Teaching Algebra With Meaning! Less Rules, More Number Sense
Algebra is much more than moving numbers and variables around and balancing equations. Classes are often focused on following a memorized procedure that helps students get answers without learning and investigating algebraic relationships. We need to help them learn and trust the math rather than memorize.
The hard part about algebra is building the equations. But students are mostly given the equations and are just asked to find an answer. So they miss out on the real study of algebra. Answers are important but they are not the math. The math happens on the way to the answer.
In this workshop, teachers will be asked to look at algebra in a very different light by using “jumps” on an open number line. We will use a model and interesting contexts that allow us to talk about much more than the answer. We will look at the big ideas behind algebra and show how kids can both see and show the math rather than just memorize and reproduce a procedure.

Introducing the Expanding Expression Tool
Note: Please be on your own device for this session.
The Expanding Expression Tool (EET) helps students develop their oral and written expression by using a multisensory approach to give strong descriptive definitions. The program builds skills in understanding similarities and differences, making associations, naming functions, categorizing objects, using prior knowledge, and general vocabulary development. It is great for students who have difficulty organizing their thoughts or knowing what information is important to share.

Join me in learning how this program uses 7 different colored beads to help students remember the information that creates a complete mental picture of a word/concept. Learn how students can go from using the program to provide basic descriptions of objects to summarizing a book, telling a personal story, or comparing and contrasting two ideas.

Fonics Can Be Conphusing - Word Study to Teach Children About How Spelling Works
Note: Please be on your own device for this session.
This session will examine how to teach children to focus their attention on the critical features of words- meaning, patterns and sounds. Session participants will need to be on their own device that has a camera for this session- we will explore using collaborative groupwork vertical spaces (Building Thinking Classrooms Liljedahl)  virtually through Jamboard.  In this session we will examine phoneme-grapheme relationships and examine the patterns of spelling that are present when one looks at the meaning of words. Students don't need to memorize the spellings of words if they understand the relationship between spelling and meaning. We will explore the difference between the terms phonemes, graphemes, digraphs, dipthongs and blends.  Did you know that there are meaning-based patterns in the vowel digraphs ee (heel) and ea (heal)?  We will examine a new way to think about word families based upon meaning instead of spelling. This session is for everyone who is interested in learning a bit more about how spelling works and how we can design our instruction to meet the needs of all our students.
